Baron Sheikh of Cornhill in the City of London
Lord Sheikh was born in Kenya and brought up in Uganda. His parents originated from the sub-continent of India.
Lord Sheikh has been honoured by the presentation of several personal awards which have been given to him for his achievements, leadership, business and community work.
He was also awarded an honorary doctorate for the humanitarian work he undertook.
He was the chairman of several companies operating in the fields of insurance, financial services and property. He used to own a company which was awarded 12 major awards over a period of three years and this has not been achieved by any other organisation. He use to be a visiting lecturer and held prominent positions in British Insurance Brokers Association and the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Lord Sheikh was elevated to the House of Lords in 2006. He was an active peer and spoke regularly in the House of Lords on a variety of subjects. He has travelled extensively overseas and visited a number of countries.
He founded the Conservative Muslim Forum in 2005 and was its Chairman until recently. He was the President of the Conservative Muslim Forum between 2020-2022.
He was a Patron of several Muslim and non-Muslim organisations and was actively involved in strengthening relationships between various racial and religious groups. He was brought up in a multi-racial community and learned to speak several languages and respect all religions.
He founded and funded a registered charity named after his father.
Lord Sheikh’s Coat of Arms
Lord Sheikh has his own Coat of Arms which was designed by the College of Arms.
It signifies the importance of education as the peacock is holding quill pens. Also the word “Iqra” is Arabic for “Read”, the first word of the Quran to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The doves on each side of the shield which bears the Islamic crescent convey the message that Islam is a religion of peace.
Sadly, the late Lord Sheikh passed away on 22 September 2022 at the age of 81.
