A literary and cultural evening was held on 24 October 2013 at the House of Lords. This was a first for the CMF but hopefully will not be the last.

Lord Sheikh, CMF Chairman, described how the idea germinated after the splendid Mughal Exhibition at the British Library a few months ago. He described how impressive he found the manuscripts displayed, depicting the events in the life of the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah II, and his expression of sorrows.   Dr Alam Ara Khan, a member of the CMF Executive was asked to organise an event to remember him. Thus ‘A Tribute To The Last Mughal Emperor and a traditional Urdu Mushaira’ was assembled by her in the grand surroundings of Committee Room G of The House of Lords.

To commence Dr Javed Sheikh Recited the Holy Quran and Dr Salma Iqbal gave a Naat in her melodious voice.

The Tribute  was given by Dr Khan who talked about the life of the last Mughal Emperor, Abu Zafar Sirajuddin Mohammad Bahadur Shah II, a poet king who used the title ‘Zafar’.  She took the audience down memory lane describing his personal attributes and his reign in Mughal India where he had assembled a court of cultural brilliance in Delhi. He was a kind and compassionate man, a patron of artists, a skilled calligrapher, and an accomplished poet. However he was not a general capable of leading armed forces.

Dr Khan described the tragic fall of the Mughal Dynasty that had lasted over 300 years, and had encompassed centuries of culture and learning of which Zafar was the last torch-bearer. After his defeat and surrender to the East India Company’s forces he was exiled to Rangoon where he remained prisoner in penury and was buried in an anonymous grave after his death in 1862. She complemented her talk by punctuating it with Zafar’s poetry.

The second half of the evening consisted of the Mushaira where twelve reputable poets based in the UK read out their work,  demonstrating the high calibre of their scholarship. Some recited in melody. The Mushaira was chaired by Mrs Muhsina Jilani and compered by Dr Ahsan Zaidi.  Mrs Sabeeha Siddiqi sang the words of the famous poets Zauq and Ghalib from Zafar’s Court.

The audience appeared mesmerised by their performances and participated appropriately.

The ambience, the excellent poetry, the history of the past, the grand setting, the polished audience, all succeeded in creating an atmosphere appropriate for the memory of an emperor.

Assessing the feelings of the audience Lord Sheikh suggested holding a similar literary event next year.

Our particular thanks go to the CMF administrator Mrs Shaheen Mahmood who ensured that all went smoothly with elegant catering. Lady Sheikh closed the meeting, within our allotted time thanking all the participants for a most enjoyable evening.

The Conservative Party is a party for all parts of the country, and Muslims are now found everywhere in Britain. Accordingly setting up local branches is a key part of the Conservative Muslim Forum’s strategy.

On Saturday 19 October, we launched the Conservative Muslim Forum East Midlands Branch at a public meeting in Nottingham. The speakers at the event included:

  • Hafiz Fazal Ahmed Qadri – Quran recital
  • Cllr Halimah Khaled – Councillor for Toton & Chilwell Meadows on Broxtowe Borough Council
  • Mohammed Amin – CMF Deputy Chairman
  • Lord Sheikh – CMF Chairman
  • Neville Baxter – President, Nottingham Conservatives
  • Anna Soubry – MP for Broxtowe and Under Secretary of State for Defence
  • Cllr Georgina Culley – Conservative Group Leader, Nottingham City Council
  • Mr Maqsood – Vote of thanks

There was also a delightful meal after the speeches while people mingled.

The event was mentioned in the Nottinghamshire In Touch edition of November 2013.

While speaking Lord Sheikh turns and addresses the top table. From left to right: Councillor Khaled, Anna Soubry MP, Raja Najabat Hussain (member of the CMF Executive) and Neville Baxter.

Over the last week, the Prime Minister has made two announcements which demonstrate the Government’s commitment to ensuring that Muslims are not excluded from the financial system due to their faith, and to ensuring that Britain remains the leading country for international Islamic finance outside the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries.

On Monday 21 October 2013 the Prime Minister hosted an Eid reception at No. 10 Downing Street at which the Conservative Muslim Forum were well represented. During his speech he said:

I want Britain to be one of the world centres of Islamic finance. And that should go from the highest and most mightiest financial institution all the way to things like start-up loans that we have introduced and are fantastically successful – we’ve got tens of thousands of young people taking them on and starting up their own businesses.

And tonight I can announce that we will make sure that there is a type of start-up loan that is totally consistent with all the principles of Islamic finance. We must do that for start-up loans, we must do it for student loans, we must do it for enterprise allowances and for all of those things. That’s what a welcoming, tolerant, multi-racial country does.

Yesterday the Prime Minister opened the World Islamic Economic Forum in London. This is the first time that the WIEF has been held outside an OIC country. During his speech, he made the following announcment about a UK sovereign sukuk.

This government wants Britain to become the first sovereign outside the Islamic world to issue an Islamic bond.

So the Treasury is working on the practicalities of issuing a bond-like sukuk worth around £200 million and we very much welcome the involvement of industry in developing this initiative which we hope to launch as early as next year.

A sukuk is the Islamic finance instrument that corresponds to a tradable bond. See the Wikipedia article on sukuk.

The Prime Minister also mentioned in his speech a number of other developments in Islamic finance in the UK. To read the full text click here.

The Conservative Muslim Forum is delighted by these announcements. As well as demonstrating the Government’s commitment to financial inclusion and the competitiveness of London, the two speeches also recognise the contribution that Muslims are making to British society.

The CMF’s Deputy Chairman Mohammed Amin is an expert on Islamic finance and yesterday, in a purely personal capacity, wrote the linked article on the ConservativeHome website welcoming the announcement. He has also provided, again in a purely personal capacity, a simple explanation of what a sukuk is.

Our fourth and fifth objectives are:

  • Encourage Muslims to make effective and positive contributions to the development of an inclusive and cohesive society in the United Kingdom.
  • Work to maintain and build bridges with all communities and religions within the United Kingdom.

Accordingly when we were asked to send a speaker to Rayne’s Park High School in London for their Religious Education Day on 18 October 2013, Executive Member Cllr Asif Ayub readily volunteered. The subject was “Peace and Conflict” and he was expressly asked to discuss Islamic attitudes to war but also to include the ideas of forgiveness, reconciliation and how Islam contributes to the promotion of world peace. He shared the session with another speaker, Rev Peter Taylor who presented the Christian perspective on the same themes.

Reflecting on his experience of giving the talk, Asif recalled one Muslim student approached him during a break and saying:

“Oh my God you don’t know how much you have helped me. You have lifted months of torment from my mind because of my school friends coming to me and showing me a quote from the Quran which they interpreted as saying that non-Muslims will all go to Hell and asking me if that’s what I believe? Listening to you, now, I can go and tell him that this is not the case, and this makes me feel so good, you have no idea”.

Asif commented that as a Muslim he was aware that that the boy did not want to believe that either.

Raza Anjum, Chairman of the CMF Youth Wing, attended an Eid reception hosted by His Excellency Matthew W. Barzun, the Ambassador of the United States of America to the United Kingdom which was held on 5 September 2013 at Winfield House, the Ambassador’s official residence.

While he was there Raza exchanged views with the U.S. Ambassador about the importance that Britain attaches to its longstanding special relationship with America which is based upon shared political, cultural and historical relations.

Raza also held discussions with His Excellency, Prince Mohammed bin Nawwaf, the Saudi Ambassador to the United Kingdom regarding the trade and investment relationship between the UK and Saudi Arabia.

On Tuesday 1 October 2013, the Associate Parliamentary Group on Islamic Finance and Diversity in Financial Markets held a fringe event “The importance of Islamic Finance in UK Growth.”

The event was chaired by Lord Sheikh, Vice Chair, Associate Parliamentary Group on Islamic Finance and Diversity in Financial Markets. Chairman of CMF.

The other speakers were:

  • Nigel Denison – Director, Head of Wealth Management and Treasury, Bank of London & The Middle East (BLME)
  • Professor Nora Colton – Dean Royal Docks Business School, University of East London
  • Mohammed Amin – Islamic Finance Consultant. Previously UK Head of IF at PwC. Deputy Chairman of CMF.

The speakers explained the current state of the Islamic finance industry in the UK, the types of transactions being undertaken and the scope for Islamic finance to aid UK growth.

The photograph below shows the speakers. From left to right, Professor Colton, Mr Amin, Lord Sheikh and Mr Denison.

At 6pm on Monday 30 September 2013 the national Conservative Muslim Forum and its branches in Yorkshire & Humber and the North West held a fringe meeting, hosted by Lord Sheikh, CMF Chairman.

The venue was the Zouk Tea Bar and Grill Restaurant, The Quadrangle, Chester Street, Manchester M1 5QS.

The aim was to discuss the need for the Conservative Party to win votes amongst the Muslim community, and how the Conservative Muslim Forum can help. The meeting was well attended by CMF members and others within the Conservative Party who had come along to make contacts and pick up ideas.

Some of the speakers are pictured below.

Our Master of Ceremonies Raja Najabat Hussain

Our keynote speaker, the Rt Hon Andrew Lansley, MP for South Cambridgeshire & Leader of the House of Commons.

Some of the Conservative Muslim Forum’s work is not expressly political. Our fourth and fifth objectives are:

  • Encourage Muslims to make effective and positive contributions to the development of an inclusive and cohesive society in the United Kingdom.
  • Work to maintain and build bridges with all communities and religions within the United Kingdom.

Accordingly, when we were approached by Ms Noreen Jones, Head of Religious Education at Rayne’s Park High School in London to provide a speaker for her school’s RE days, we readily agreed. Such participation allows pupils, both Muslim and non-Muslim, to interact with senior successful Muslim role models from the Conservative Muslim Forum.

In the spring, Executive Member Cllr Asif Ayub and Deputy Chairman Mohammed Amin both spoke at RE days on the subject of Islam.

In July 2013 Asif Ayub spoke there again. Afterwards, Asif said:

“I was delighted to be invited to speak to the youngsters on “Marriage and Relationships”, aiding in their learning and development for their curriculum needs, answering questions and clearing misunderstandings, dealing with various sensitive topics through Q& A, building bridges of common understanding and explaining the differences among religions while reasoning with them. I was also delighted to be thanked by the students, the teachers and the head of the school.”

The 24 April 2013 collapse of a garment factory in Savar in the Greater Dhaka region in Bangladesh horrified the world, with a death toll of over 1,000.

Several members of the CMF Executive and their friends were deeply touched by the disaster, and decided to visit Bangladesh at their own expense to provide relief to the survivors and to the families of the deceased. They launched a fundraising appeal which is copied below:

YOUR FRIENDS OF SAVAR

“Friends of Savar” is a response to the tragic events which unfolded in Savar, Bangladesh, the effects of which have affected the lives of thousands and will continue to do so for decades to come and has touched the hearts of thousands around the world. “Friends of Savar” are a group of volunteers, who like you, felt the need to let the people of Savar know that they were not alone in the misfortune that has befallen them; we are with them and will continue to be with them.

We have come together with the common intention of providing immediate and long term care for the survivors and their families and represent a movement in the name of humanity.

The response has been overwhelming and heartening with the support and affection everyone has shown towards the victims of Savar with many of you spreading the word over the last weeks to try and raise as much funds as possible simply to make the lives of those affected a little better.

Donations and support have been pledged from members of all communities and different backgrounds including a sitting Lord, making a large personal financial contribution to the cause. Not only have you raised funds and continue to do so, but amongst all our supporters many have volunteered to travel to Bangladesh including Monir Ali, Attic Rahman, Muhibur Rahman, Cllr Asif Ayub, Ali Ahmed, Hasina Momtaz, Najma Begum, Fiona Barry, Faruk Miah, Abdus Salam and Ash Zaman who have all made large personal financial contributions to this cause.

The volunteers (above) are travelling to Bangladesh between 18 -25 May 2013 having pledged to work hard to ensure every penny of your donations are put to the best possible use and have maximum impact. All of our volunteers are professional people who have set aside time from work and their families for this cause.

They will be using their own funds for travel, food and accommodation in Bangladesh. Therefore 100% of your donations will go towards this relief effort.

We would like to give a massive thank you to all who have come forward in support of this cause in Savar, thousands of miles away, at the call of humanity.

To win the 2015 General Election, the Conservative Party needs to win votes from all regions of the country, and from all parts of the community.

Historically, most British Muslims have voted for parties other than the Conservative Party. However at each general election the share won by the Conservative Party has risen, and one of the key goals of the Conservative Muslim Forum is to accelerate that trend.

On 4 September 2013 the CMF presented at an event for Conservative candidates at Conservative Campaign Headquarters . The CMF team was led by Mohammed Amin, who gave a brief presentation of the issues and his key messages for Conservative candidates. To maximise the event’s usefulness, all the rest of the time was devoted to a Q&A session, where the practical electoral experience of the rest of the CMF team listed below could be shared with the candidates in responding to their questions.

The CMF team comprised:

  1. Mohammed Amin – CMF Deputy Chairman.
  2. Cllr Jeanne-Marie Douglas – CMF Executive Member. Elected on 6 May 2011 by the Craven Ward to Melton Borough Council.
  3. Cllr Asif Ayub – CMF Executive Member. Local Councillor for the Borough of Spelthorne and a member of the Licencing Committee, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, and a deputy on Heathrow Airport Consultative Committee.
  4. Fuad Hamzeh – CMF Executive Member. Previously Agent for the Rutland & Melton Conservative Association (Rt Hon. Alan Duncan MP).
  5. Ajantha Tennakoon – CMF Executive Member. Attorney at Law and active in Finchley & Golders Green Conservatives, the Conservative Women’s Association, and the Conservative Councillors’ Association.

As well as sharing thoughts at the meeting, the CMF will be developing some written suggestions for Conservative candidates which will be available from Shaheen Mahmood.

Below are a couple of group photographs showing the informal approach of the event.
